Incredibly Successful Day at Publix!

Since today was Publix's big 50% off Kelloggs cereal sale, I decided to finally use my $5 off $50 coupon to my advantage. I will confess, I was in the store for over an hour making sure I was doing everything as well as possible. I have to say, I don't think I did too bad :)

Woo hoo :) Also, I found a peelie coupon on a display last week that said get a $5 Publix gift card wyb 3 Always, Gilette, Tampax of Crest products. So, I received a $5 gift card for purchasing the 3 tubes of toothpaste :)
When I got home with my purchases and told my hubs about the sweet cereal deal, he said he wanted a few more boxes of Smart Start. So, I went to the Publix on Knox McRae :)

Now, I fully realize you may think I'm completely insane for purchasing so much cereal for just 2 people. In my defense we do love our cereal, but more than that there was a promotion I wanted to take advantage of :) Many Kelloggs cereals and other products are specially marked with cars 2 pictures on them. These boxes all have codes inside that can be redeemed for prizes. I did this deal with the NutriGrain Bars a while back, but you can redeem up to 30 codes for this promotion. So, out of all the cereals I got today, 12 of them had codes in them. 12 codes will get me 3 $5 visa cards :) So technically, you couls take another $15 off my total for my trips. If you are interested in this promotions, check it out here.

So, if you are a Sunday shopper (which I am not), I highly suggest you go take advantage of this cereal sale. Not only is it a good deal, but you can redeem them for gift cards, get free marshmallows, and get free fruit if you have the right coupons :)  Keep in mind this is a great opportunity to get a good deal on some of the cereals that never seem to go on sale or have coupons available, like me with the Smart Start. Also, cereal is good for at least a year, so it is a great food storage item!

      Target Trip

So, my pre-coupon total would have been $89.48, but I only paid $38.30! I saved $51.18 just with my coupons :) That is a high savings for Target, so I was quite proud. What made this trip even better was that my husband came with me and honestly seemed to have fun, which he usually does not have when he comes on a coupon shopping trip with me. I guess I just have to buy him some jeans and a shirt to keep him happy each time :)

P.S. I had never known that Smuckers made Magic Shell in Cupcake and Orange Cream flavors. I am super excited to give them a try!

        Free Milka Bars at Walgreens

I finally got into Walgreens to get this deal before it's gone :) What's better than free chocolate?

        • 2 triple packs of Chips Ahoy with Reeses Chips, clearance 25¢ each = 2 for 50¢
I had to go to two stores to get them all, but my diligence paid off. Also, if you are not familiar with the monthly coupon book at Walgreens, you can grab one at the front of the store where the ads are. Also the stores usually put a nice stack of the coupons above each of the available items, so with these chocolate bars, I just had to grab the coupon when I grabbed the chocolate :) Easy.

            Fantabulous Food! Chess Pie

This is a family recipe with a serious cult following. I have made this pie for many people, some who worked in high end restaurants as chefs and even they have said this was the best chess pie they had ever tasted :) For those of you who don't know what chess pie is, imagine the gooey inside of a pecan pie without the pecans on top :) It's similar to that. Yumm...

            Chess Pie:
            • 3 whole eggs
            • 1 1/2 cups sugar
            • 1 tsp corn meal
            • 1 tsp vinegar
            • 1 tsp vanilla
            • 1 stick margarine, melted - Absolutely must be margarine!
            • pie crust
            1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl.
Stir until well combined. If you can still see some of the egg separating, just keep stirring until it's all smooth and sticks together.
            2. Pour filling into crust. You can use store bought - I recommend the Mrs. Fields brand - or you can make your own Easy Pie Crust.
            3. Bake at 350° F for 30 minutes or until center still jiggles but is mostly set.
This pie has a really cool chemical reaction in the oven. It begins as a straight liquid.
As it bakes, it begins to form bubbles.
Then the bubbles cause it to rise up a bit.
Then the risen top will make a golden brown crust.
I ended up having to bake my pie at 350° F for about 40 minutes, so just jiggle it a little after 30 minutes to check it.
            4. Allow your pie to cool before you serve it, but it can still be slightly warm.
MMmmmm... seriously, this is my favorite pie. It's absolutely delicious and ridiculously easy to make - you should give it a try.

I even made this pie for my sister Marisa for her birthday. She had been begging me to make her one for months.
I think she liked it :)

            Finding Coupons: Coupon Hunting

One of the common questions I have gotten when polling various coupon newbies is, "Where do you find those coupons?" Once you start couponing, you will notice that coupons can literally be found everywhere and anywhere! You just have to know where to look for them, so the Finding Coupons segments will be devoted to telling you specific places that are tried and true coupon homes.

            Coupon Hunting!
This is a nicer term I came up with for what some people call 'dumpster diving'. However, let me just state that I DO NOT dumpster dive. To me, Coupon Hunting involved only recycling bins and in my case newspaper only recycling bins. While some of you out there may be thinking I'm insane, I implore you to hear me out. I have a very specific system that I follow for this practice.

First of all, I will admit this is a controversial practice in the coupon world. The show on TLC called Extreme Couponing showed many of its couponers doing this and this has caused the coupon industry to raise an eyebrow and try to make regulations about it. If you are interested in learning more about that, see Jill Cataldo's article here - the article mainly focuses on the selling of coupons, but it talks about dumpster diving too. Very interesting article.

So, with that side note mentioned, I will tell you what I do that I still feel ethical about. I am a huge fan of the recycling areas of apartments buildings and condos. Think about it - many condos especially are filled mostly with seniors and most seniors read the paper everyday. Also, only about 4% of people out there use their coupons. This means a ridiculous amount of coupons get thrown away. And when you are a responsible senior citizen who lives in a condo with sectioned off recycling, you will recycle your paper and coupons instead of throwing them away.  So, together with my mom and sisters, we go out at least every 2 weeks to a specific condo recycling area and pull all of the coupons out of the newspapers.

The result of this is usually an awesome haul of coupon inserts. The first time we ever did it we ended up with over 60 full inserts and many single pages that had been separated and we didn't know which insert they originally belonged to.
Here is just a small example of one of our trips. This basket is filled about 6 inches deep with coupon inserts and we had already taken some out to sort them.

So, how is this ethical? Have you ever heard the phrase one man's trash is another man's treasure? It is entirely true in this case - and in a very literal sense. I even read one other coupon blogger say that she actually called the recycling center to see if this was legal and they said it absolutely was. While most recycling centers have been forced to not allow people to come search through the newspapers after they have been taken to the center (see that article about that one), before they are in the possession of the recycling center, they are fair game. So, I just make sure to not do any purchases that are too ridiculous. The last thing I want is for my store to get in trouble and stop allowing coupons. I try to be as fair as possible, even splitting my mass of coupons into several separate transactions and on separate days sometimes so I slip under the radar. This is something that everyone just has to form their own opinion about. I can't tell you what is right and wrong, you have to decide for yourself what is ok.

A Few Tips On Coupon Hunting -

            • Always coupon hunt at night. I like to go no earlier than 9:30 pm since most people are not out and about by then. Even though I don't mind if people see me, I don't like the suspicion so I prefer to avoid being seen.
            • Bring a box or basket to hold your coupons. You will get a bunch, so come prepared to carry them away.
            • Wear gloves - not because the bins are gross or anything, they should be pretty clean. But newsprint ink is notorious for rubbing off on your hands so you will be black by the time you are done otherwise.
            • Bring a friend - not only for safety reasons, but to make the time pass quicker and have fun! I mean, you're rifling through a trash bin, have fun with it!
            • Don't try to clip them all! I tried this the first time and my fingers went numb from all the cutting and I didn't even make a dent. Organize your inserts by putting the same ones together. Then look through each different one and just clip out the coupons you know you are going to need immediately and save the rest in case you need to go back and clip others for a later sale.
So, hopefully you don't all think I'm crazy. You don't have to do it to the extent that I do. Just check your neighbor's recycling bin when you walk the dog at night and see what you find! This is the best way to get a bunch of coupons quickly - I promise it will be worth it!
