WIP Wednesday: Shawl Madness

This week has been another case of finishing a cute crochet project (to be revealed on Friday!) and then starting a much longer term knitting project. So I only have one item that is still a WIP right now.

This is my Blue Angel Shawl that I'm making from the kit I bought on Craftsy (you'll have to scroll way down to the bottom to find it but it's a great price!). The kit included the pattern, a Craftsy workshop (like a class but not a video, just really detailed instructions and lots of pictures), and a skein of Cascade Heritage Sock Yarn in Como Blue. I started this on Thursday night and I'm about 1/3 of the way down length-wise, but I know it will take much longer to see real progress now - that's the trouble with shawls. The longer they get, the wider they get, so it starts taking forever to finish a row.

Man has this been an experience so far! I'm learning that I'm not so great at lace yet. The lace pattern is 8 rows repeated over and over at this point. I'll knit a row, purl back, then get to the lace section of the next row only to discover that I did something wrong and ended up with an extra stitch in my lace section. There is no way to fudge it with this pattern, so the only thing I can do is tink back to the previous lace section and do it again. Once I even finished an entire 8 row repeat only to discover that I did the first row twice disrupting the pattern. It drove me nuts so I spent one whole evening tinking all the way back to it. Ugh, it was not fun. I think I've spent as much time back tracking as I have knitting on this so far. But I really like the design on it and the yarn is really lovely, so I'm excited to improve my lace knitting with this project.
