This pattern is the Chrysanthemum frutescens socks from Hunter Hammersen's Knitter's Curiosity Cabinet Vol 1. I've had this book for ages and never made any of the patterns, frankly because they intimidate me. But this past March I wanted a pair of neutral colored socks but I wanted them to still be pretty, so I dug through my stash and landed on this pattern to jazz up a plain gray yarn.
The yarn has been in my stash for quite a few years. I used a skein of Morning Bright Organic Merino Sock in the Moonlit colorway that I won on Susan b. Anderson's blog. It's just been hanging out waiting for the right project, and this pattern definitely helped the yarn shine. Lovely feel to the yarn too.
The pattern used a different heel than I've done before - it was still a heel flap and gusset, but the heel flap had purl bumps in a gridded pattern. It took a few starts to get it right, but it's one of those things that once you get it, you get it. That was the case with much of this pattern - it took a little puzzling to wrap you head around it, but once it clicked it was no problem. The picot cuff was about the fiddliest thing I've ever knitted - all those needles and tiny stitches being folded over and stitched together. I got there in the end, but it was a job.
And now for the tale of woe - the socks are too small for me! I could barely get them on my feet for these photos and I thought I was going to rip the yarn getting them off. I need more space in the arch, so I know for next time, but that doesn't help me on this pair. So sad.
Check out my sock video at the bottom of this page for even more details on these socks :)
