The Girl on the Train is a murder mystery thriller that I'm positive will end up as a movie any day now. The story follows Rachael, a slightly awkward alcoholic who lives outside London. Two years before, her husband left her for the woman he was cheating on her with, Anna, and moved her into Rachael's old house with him. Rachael has been living with a friend of hers ever since, becoming progressively more alcoholic all the while. She even loses her job for being drunk at work, but doesn't want her friend to know and worry about her paying the rent, so she still leaves the house every morning and takes the train into London to keep up appearances. While on the train, she looks into the yards as she passes, always gravitating toward the house of her husband's new 3-doors-down neighbors. She calls the couple Jason and Jess and imagines what a wonderful and happy life they have. One day, Rachael sees "Jess" kissing another man on her patio, which upsets Rachael immensely. When Jess (who's actual name is Megan) is reported as missing, Rachael feels it is her duty to go to the police with the info about "the other man". This starts a very crazy spiral that turns into so much more than it ever seems at the beginning.
I enjoyed this book. I wanted a "distraction" that would grab me, and this certainly fit that bill. The story is fast paced and interesting. I kept thinking I had figured out the murderer, only to read further and discover a new plot twist, so I was left constantly guessing. This book is well written and the characters are much deeper than them seem at first. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
