Franny Banks is an average girl in the 90s living in New York City and trying her hardest to be a serious actress. When she moved to New York, she set a time limit for herself to "be successful" in her chosen field or she would admit defeat and go on with her life down another path. The book picks up when she has just 6 months left until her self-imposed deadline, and she is trying to define what "success" means for her. In this last 6 months, she managed to land an agent after an embarrassing showcase for her acting class, start in a national commercial, have a cameo roll in a sitcom for a few episodes, and starts dating the only successful actor in her acting class. All these things certainly put her closer to her goal, but none of them feels quite successful enough and she worries that she is going to have to leave. Franny does a lot of growing up through the life events in this book, and everything culminates in a big career move that just kind of happens because she is finally ready for it.
Someday, Someday, Maybe was kind of a fluff read for me. I didn't really know what to expect except that the book was popular and looked like it would be a nice little escape of a read. I didn't even know who the author was until I started reading (which would have put me off reading it in the first place as I was never a Gilmore Girls fan). The writing and inner dialogue with Franny are pretty spot on with the Gilmore GIrls reference, and it took me a while of getting into the life of Franny before I got over that constant reminder. The book ended up being a kind of cliché rom-com but with a cute twist that no one can ever fully resist. It was enjoyable, but certainly not earth shattering. This is nice if you just want an easy read to get you out of your own existence for a while. I give this book 3 out of 5 stars
