My Great Pixi Beauty Find

So, I had to go to Target on Saturday night and I hit a mega score on the back aisle clearance stuff.
I got all of these Pixi products for 50% off! Plus I grabbed some sweet new nail polish colors. I had never really used anything from Pixi before I got the Lip & Line in my Bloom Ambassador box. I was really impressed with the quality of the lip stick (if not in love with the color). So, when I saw these for so cheap I had to grab them and give them a full try out too. Here's what I got:

  • Shade Quartette in Shades of Taupe - $11.00
  • Large Lash Mascara - $9.00
  • Lash Line Ink - $8.00
  • Natural Brow Duo - $9.00
The funny thing about all 4 of these products is that they are still listed as new products both on Bloom.com and on PixiBeauty.com - yet they were already 1/2 price at Target. I'm not complaining though :)
I decided to try all my new products together today. These are the results!
I really love the shadow quartette. The colors are all surprisingly blendable - even when I use a primer underneath. The shades look really nice - not too over the top, just a nice a slightly smokey look. The shadows have just a touch of shimmer and it really makes my eyes pop. The liner was crazy easy to use - so smooth. The brow crayon worked great. I'll be honest - I've never filled in my eye brows before. I've never really needed to, but I am surprised at how much I like the look. It just fills in the space so you don't see underneath the hairs.

The only item I'm not completely loving is the mascara. My lashes are certainly not looking 'large'. Also, it was fairly clumpy and I had to use the iLash comb just to get it to look presentable. It's ok - but not my favorite.

So, I highly recommend checking your local Target store to see if they have these items on sale too! I already checked online and they are still normal price everywhere so this is a great find!

Also, Bloom.com is offering 20% off everything on their site! Just use promo code SAVE20 at checkout to save big!

Bloom Review: Pixi Beauty Lip & Line

This was one of the more intimidating items in my Bloom Ambassador box this time. I'm not a big lipstick wearer. I always wear lip balm, sometimes tinted but never a really solid lipstick. Add my fear of lipstick to the really dark color of this one and I was really not loving the idea. But I gave it a go anyway.
It actually doesn't look nearly as bad as I thought it would. The shade goes well with my skin tone. It is much darker in person then it looks in the photo, but at least it 'goes'.
As far as the lipstick itself goes, I actually really liked using it. It has great coverage and goes on very smooth. It also lasts really well. A little would come off on my straw when I drank, but it didn't affect the coverage and I wore it for several hours before needing to re-apply. I think if it was in a lighter (more me) color, I would really like this product, but in this color (called Orchid Rose) is just not for me.

I give this product 4 out of 5 stars! I had mixed feelings overall, but they were all related to the color. The product itself was great - it applies smoothly and evenly with great coverage. It also lasts a really long time (even through eating). I know if I had it in a lighter color, I would really love it! I highly recommend picking one of these up!

Bloom Review: Stila In The Know Palette

I almost shouted hooray when I opened my Bloom Ambassador box and saw this - a full sized Stila In The Know Palette :) The palette includes 10 colors of eye shadow and an eyeliner in a case with a mirror.
These colors are right up my alley and I was very excited to try them all out :) I wanted to try several different looks to show what this palette can do.

Look #1 -
This was the first look I created with the palette. I basically tried what I normally do but with these new colors. I liked the look ... until I saw this photo. The colors seriously accentuate my dark circles and even make my slight wrinkles under my eyes show up way more than normal. Paired with that lip color, I look really old. Yuck - I didn't even want to post these.
Here is a close up of the shadows. I used Air from lid to brow, then Driftwood on the lid, and added Clay as a highlight at the tear duct and around the lid. Please know that my lid is not normally so wrinkly - I was kind of squinting my eye shut.

So, I had to go back to the drawing board.

Look #2 -
I decided to play around with the palette when I was going to a local charity dinner :) I must say, I was so much more happy with this look than the first.
I think I look much younger right off the bat :) I wore my favorite 60s style dress (with a pouffy skirt and everything!) and I wanted to really make my eyes pop.
For this look, I followed one of the suggestions in the booklet that came with the palette. It's called Classic Siren. I used Air as a base all over the eye first. I started with Clay from lash to brow, Rain on the lid, and Earth in the crease. I topped it off with Air as a highlight under the brow and at the tear duct. Definitely much better than the first :)

Look #3 -
I wanted to go a little out of my norm (and try a few products at once) for my last look. I was at home watching The Devil Wears Prada - seriously whenever that comes on I always want to primp in some way. So I went all out on a very dramatic look ... with a winged eye! I used my new Physician's Formula felt tip eyeliner for the first time and I am in love (but that's a whole different review).
I've never done a winged eyeliner before! Anyway, the Stila palette was the perfect compliment to my bold eyeliner.
This look was another suggestion that came with the palette and it's called Exotic Stare. I used Clay from lash to brow and then used Ebony in the crease but fanned out a bit more than I normally would to create a slightly smokey eye. It looked good just like that, but the example photo seemed to have a bit of a shimmer so I put just a smidge of phlouf! from Mac over all of it to add to the shine.
Next I followed this tutorial (I came across this on Pinterest) to do my eyeliner. Once the top was done I knew I had to add a harder liner on the bottom than I normally do, so I used the same liner in the bottom lash line but in a much thinner line. And of course, it wouldn't be complete without mascara and I used Voluminous False Lashes by L'OrĂ©al in black (I've been wanting to try this stuff)
I finished off my look with my favorite shade of red lipstick (CoverGirl NatureLux in Peony) to amp up the old school glam factor. Still, there seemed to be something missing...
A more retro-ish hairstyle :) Too bad I had no where to go, lol. Notice the Planet Fitness t-shirt. Oh yeah, so chic. This was definitely my favorite look out of them all. It was fun to do and I felt very glamorous. It's a lot more makeup then I would wear to work, but for a night out it would be awesome!

I give this product 4 out of 5 stars! I love the versatility of this eye shadow palette. The colors are great for everyday wear but can also be easily amped up for a night out depending on your eyeliner and whatnot. The shadows apply nice and smooth and have great color depth especially when paired with a primer. The only reason this didn't get the 5th star is I'm actually not a big fan of the eyeliner that is included in the palette. I think I may be the only person in the world who doesn't like it, but I just don't love Stila's Smudge Sticks - I found it very difficult to apply because it wouldn't glide well and the self sharpening tip just made it hard to get a fine line. Even though I didn't like the liner, I loved the shadows so much that I would still consider buying this palette again!

Bloom Review: Lea Journo Intense Hydrating Masque

This is another item that was included in my Bloom Ambassador box this month: Lea Journo's Parfait Intense Hydrating Mask. This is a mask for dry and damaged hair - which I don't have really so I didn't know how it would turn out.

How was the application?
This was a really nice product to try :) You just wash your hair, then towel off your hair a bit and apply the mask. Let the mask stay on for 2 to 5 minutes and then rinse it out. Pretty easy. I actually just would wash my hair, then get out and apply the mask quickly, get back in the shower and shave and whatnot before rinsing it off. The first thing that hits you is the lovely smell :) It's not overpowering, just a nice scent and it lasts for a little while. Since I have oily hair to being with I didn't want to overdo it, so I just washed with shampoo - I didn't use my usual conditioner. The mask rinsed out really clean and everything went great :)

Notice all the smiles - that means I like it :)

How did it perform?
I really love this mask! My hair felt and smelled great afterward. Once I blow dried and styled my hair I could see a big difference. Even my husband commented on how much more healthy my hair looked. Not that my hair was nasty or anything before, but it just looked shinier and healthier. In fact my hair looked like it did before I used to blow dry it everyday. I had just as much volume as I normally would - my hair wasn't weighed down at all. It was all in all a great experience :)

I give this product 5 out of 5 stars! I am really surprised at how much I liked this product. My hair looked great, smelled great and felt great. Even though thin and oily hair, it really nourished and moisturized without making my hair heavy at all. I can only imagine how this would perform on thicker or drier hair than mine. Since it worked so well for me I know it would be great for all hair types. I highly recommend giving this a try!

Bloom Review: Pop AM to PM Kit

After I had my skin prepped and then evened out on my at home spa day, the next step: eyes. Not to sound vain or anything here, but I think it's important to realize you best features and play them up. I know that my eyes are my best feature, so that tends to be the area that I use the most makeup. So, when I saw the Pop Am to PM Kit in my Bloom Ambassador box this month, I was excited to play around with it.
This is a really cute set with 2 eye shadow palettes - one is more in the brown realm for a day look and the other is different shades of blue for a night look. Frankly, I am not a blue eye shadow type of person, but I was willing to give it a try (especially given the Pop & Pixi challenge going on on the Bloom Facebook page). But since I wanted to start off simple, I used the AM palette first.
I tried using the palette as it suggests on the box as my first look. The cream/nude as a base, the peach color on my lid, the brown in the crease, and the beige with a slight sparkle as a highlight on my brow and at the tear duct. And as you can see from the photo, I look like I don't have any eye shadow on at all. I even went outside to check out the look.

Yeah, these photos were taken in natural sunlight and I can't see any color on my eyes at all. The colors are just too close to my skin color for me to use them the way the box suggests.

So, I decided to try the PM palette. Frankly, I looked like a clown. Blue is really just not a good color on me. So, I decided to use the AM palette and then use the blues from the PM palette to accent the crease.
It was very hard to blend the blue in due to my primer I used. So, I ended up putting more of the AM palette colors on top of it until it was just a slight accent.
I will say, I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would.
It didn't look bad and I wore a navy blue shirt so it all tied in together.

I give this product 4 out of 5 stars! I had a lot of fun trying out the 2 palettes and trying to combine them so they fit with my usual look. I like how smooth the shadows apply and how well they smooth out. The blue was really just not my color - I'm too pale for such a cool color. Other than that it's a great set and I highly recommend trying it out :)

Bloom Review: Dermaheal Shampoo

Here is a product that I had never heard of before receiving it in my Bloom Ambassador box this month: Dermaheal Shampoo. I like to look up each of the products I am sent to try on Bloom before I use it so I can know what to expect and the first thing that struck me was the price - $40! That's pretty steep so this had better live up to its promises :)

Dermaheal Shampoo is designed to treat male and female pattern baldness by encouraging hair regrowth and preventing loss. Those are some big claims. I mean look at all those Bosley commercials out there - obviously they are using more than just a shampoo - but imagine if you could just suds up and grow new hair! I really wanted to put this to the full test. Sadly, it's not really possible to show pictures of the progress since I am not bald. I have lots of hair and it grows on its own, so I can only tell you the results.

How was the application?
This was the first product I used on my at home spa day a week ago, but I had been using it for about a week at that point. I am very picky about shampoos - I have a lot of hair but it is very fine and oily so anything that isn't 'volumizing' usually doesn't work out very well for me. Let's just say my mom used to call me Exxon Valdes if that paints a mental picture. So, I was really pleased that even though this shampoo is "conditioning", it didn't gunk up my hair and make it oily.

Also, the smell is wonderful. I have had to use other medicated shampoos before (*ahem* TGel) and they always seem to smell ... well, medicated. The Dermaheal is not like that at all. It's just a nice scent like normal shampoo. Also, I love the pump on the bottle. I know that's a trivial thing, but it really does give just the right amount for my hair (which is much less than I would usually use so it will last longer for me than normal). Just a small pump gave enough for a sudsy lather that covered all of my hair and even had enough to massage onto my scalp.

How did it perform?
Even though I can't prove it to you with a photo, I can tell you that it has encouraged hair growth. I judge this by how quickly my bangs have lengthened. Normally I wouldn't be aggravated by my bangs for at least a week or 2 but they are already so long I will need them cut soon. So, it definitely works! My husband was so impressed that he has started using it himself as a preventative.

I give this product 4 out of 5 stars! This really did all that it promised and more. It conditioned my hair (I didn't need to use a conditioner at all) and I did see increased growth. More than just the nitty gritty though, it was a nice experience to try this. The smell is great and it gets a very satisfying lather. I would definitely recommend this to anyone out there who is noticing some hair loss. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is the price. $40 is a little steep to me for a bottle of shampoo, however if I was loosing my hair I guess that $40 would be a cheap way to help with that. Give it a try if you are in the market for this type of product!

Bloom Review: Jonathan Dirt Texturizing Paste

Here was the final product from my Bloom Ambassador box that I used on my at home spa day - Jonathan Product Dirt Texturizing Paste.
I've received samples of this product before but I never really knew what to do with it. Since I have such long and slick hair, it's never seemed like much use to even try it. But since it was in the box, I had to at least give it a go.

It's a very thick, almost waxy-like substance that actually gives when you press on it. The directions say to take a small amount and emulsify it in your hands (basically rub it into your fingers until there is now color anymore) and then apply it to your hair.

I decided to try for some root volume which is one of the options it mentions on Bloom. I took the paste and applied it by kind of pinching my roots upward. Next, I blow dried by getting as close as possible to my root line. It looked something like this:
How's that for a self timer self portrait? :) I made sure to lean far over and get my round brush all the way up to the root line.
This was with just one side done and you can clearly see that it did give me some good volume. Sadly, I had to still brush my hair...
... which pretty much took away any of the volume.
My hair looked fine with the paste, but it did cause more tangling than normal. I also talked to a stylist friend of mine ans she said that texture paste isn't supposed to be used in long hair, which makes sense to me now. This was my finished look after all the different products I used on my at home spa day.

I give this product 3 out of 5 stars. The texturizing paste really didn't do anything to change my texture of my hair. I couldn't really even use it as a volumizer either, so it really was of mo use to me. If you have shorter hair, then this would surely be a good product, but it just isn't right for me. I bet my husband will love it though :)

Bloom Review: Tweezerman iLash Comb

This was my more intimidating looking product to try in my Bloom Ambassador box: The iLash Comb from Tweezerman.
I mean, look at this thing -
Those little prongs are just as sharp as they look and I have been known to accidentally blink while ruffling out my lashes before, so you can understand my concern. But I still wanted to give it a good try so I applied my mascara like normal and then used the comb to separate my lashes.
Looks pretty crazy, huh? I was pretty nervous and just praying I didn't flinch :)
I have to say it did a good job as separating. My lashes weren't clumpy, but I won't use mascara that clumps so this was mostly just to fan them out a bit.

I wanted to compare to the way I usually fluff out my lashes on my other eye. My favorite eye lash fluffing/separating tool is ... a dry mascara applicator. I always grab a couple if I go to stores like Sephora or Ulta and I can use the same one for months :) So I just applied my mascara and then fluffed with my usual brush.
See, it's not so bad if I blink while that think is close to my eye :)
It's a fairly close comparison, but I have to admit that the eye with the Tweezerman comb looks more separated. Also, the comb folds so when you are done you don't have to worry about catching it on everything in your makeup bag.

I give this product a 4 out of 5 stars! This comb did beat out my usual method. It would have gotten 4 stars if I wasn't afraid of going blind while using it someday. Hopefully I will get more used to it over time (like when you first use an eyelash curler and pinch the crap out of your eyelid), but it still looks intimidating and I'm sure I'm not the only consumer who would think so. If you have a problem with separating your lashes (or would like to do it better) then this is a great product for you to try and at $9.50 it won't break the bank :)

Bloom Review: Christopher Drummond Beauty Mineral Makeup

The next step on my at home spa day was to use one of the most exciting things included in my Bloom Ambassador box - The Christopher Drummond Beauty mineral makeup line! This line is new to Bloom and we were all really excited to give it a try.
I received a nice mini kit that included:
  • SkinPrep Primer
  • Duo-Phase Concealer in Light
  • Veludo Velvet Foundation in Fair
  • White Finishing Powder
  • Saude PelĂ© Radiance Booster
  • A Mini Brush
Personally, I was very excited to try out mineral makeup again. Until about 3 years ago, I was a tried and true Bare Minerals user and I used them for years. Sadly, I noticed that it suddenly wasn't giving me anywhere near the coverage I needed. Over the years my skin has become more and more reddish toned and it bugs the crap out of me. Once I finally realized that was when I stopped using mineral makeup since it wouldn't cover the red well enough. So, getting to try a different brand after so much time passing was exciting to me. Also, the Christopher Drummond line is green and non-toxic. It's even vegan approved, so it's nice to know you aren't putting any strange chemicals on your skin :)

So, first I used the primer all over. I actually really liked it - it's  been a long time since I used a skin primer and this one was very light and smooth. The next step is what kind of threw me - the concealer  Now, with Bare Minerals, you use a powder that's a little heavier for a concealer and then put your regular powder foundation over it. With this line, the concealer is an incredibly thick liquid. The info I received warned that a little goes a long way and man, they weren't kidding. The problem is because it's so thick, it didn't want to spread very far and it dried very quickly, so even though 'a little goes a long way' it didn't want to move that long way and I would just have to use more to cover all my spots. It did cover well though.
This was my whole face after just the concealer step. It covered ok, but it took forever to apply. I'm much more of a slap it on and run for the door kind of gal in the morning (hey, I've gotta get my beauty sleep) so this isn't exactly so practical.
This is my main 'redness' area - around the bottom of my nose. Also, since the concealer was so thick I didn't use it under my eyes. These pictures are with the Garnier Tinted Eye Roller. Anyway, the next step is to use the veludo velvet foundation all over. The instructions say that it works in layers and the more layers you do, the more coverage you will get. Well, layering with that teenie little brush was not exactly a pleasant experience, but I persevered.
This is just after putting on the foundation. The lighting in this picture actually hides the problems I had. The foundation didn't cover anything - it was more like a setting powder. Other than being powdery, my skin looked just the same as it did when I had just the concealer on. And I did several 'layers'. Also, the thick concealer combined with this powder really dried out my skin and of course the areas that needed the most concealer were the driest.

But, I persevered! The next step is the finishing powder - this is basically a white powder very similar looking to Mac Pre + Prime powder and it just went on translucent. Keep in mind, more powder = more drying...

But I persevered! lol How many times am I going to have to say that? The final step is to apply the radiance booster powder which is a very intimidating yellow color in the pot. It says to use sparingly, so I did, and I honestly couldn't tell any difference with it on. Maybe I'm already just too radiant? :)
This was my completed face. Even in this picture I can see some spots that are red and it bugs me. Also, I just look so ... powdery. I hate that look.
Sorry for the crappy picture quality here, but this was my biggest trouble area. See how dry and flaky my chin looks? And my spots still looked red. Now just red AND flaky. Not my favorite thing, seriously.

On a good note, there was something about this makeup that I loved.
The instructions said to use the concealer as an eye shadow primer and it worked fantastic for that! It not only primed my eye, but it covered all the annoying veins and things that I usually cover with a nude eye shadow before I add color. Unfortunately, this was really the only aspect of it that I liked.
This was my finished look with the Christopher Drummond makeup in actual daylight. See, while it looked ok in my bathroom lighting (which is awful as I'm sure you can tell), I look kind of splotchy in this photo. I see several spots just with the photo small that I don't care for and would have covered better with a different makeup. I wore the makeup out and about all day and by the time I came home a few hours later I looked shiny. AND I had zits where I had applied the concealer the heaviest. Yeah, that's great.

I give this product 2 out of 5 stars. I'm being nice and giving it the 2 stars because I did like the primer and the concealer was a great eye shadow primer. Other that that, I really did not like this line at all. It was difficult to use and didn't give me nearly enough coverage. When I take the time to use a foundation or any kind, I am doing it so it will even out my skin tone, which this did not. It took at least twice as long as any other makeup I've used and for very little pay out. I think it's great that the products are all natural, but the trade off is just not worth it to me if it means I have to look splotchy and zit covered - especially considering how much the kit costs. I had high hopes, but I'll be sticking with my usual liquid foundation for now.

Bloom Review: Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum

My at home spa day continued after using my skyn Iceland eye gels by transitioning into skin prep for makeup. I am a huge believer in products with sunscreen. Generally I use moisturizer that has spf in it, but sometimes (as you may know) that's not an option. The Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum was included in my Bloom Ambassador box and I decided to add that to my prepping routine :)
I will say, I had a previous experience with Supergoop products. I purchased their Everyday Sun Protecting Lotion for my cruise back in July and quickly found out that it was not quite enough spf for my fair skin. I still burned - granted I was outside for several hours IN July IN the Caribbean so basically one of the most difficult places to protect your skin. So, I gave it the benefit of the doubt. The Supergoop products are designed for everyday use - not lounging on a beach in the Caribbean surrounded by water. So, just know that before you make the same mistake I did. I got burned ... literally.

So, back to the serum here. I followed the directions and put this on my clean face. Bloom says that this works best on normal to dry skin and normally that would be a bad thing for me. Luckily since I hadn't applied any lotion yet, this kind of worked as a moisturizer. It wasn't oily or goopy like you would think of a normal sunscreen, though it did have that tell tale sunscreen smell. It went on great and my face just felt like I had used my regular moisturizer.
See :) I look nice and moisturized and ready to apply the rest of my makeup. The only thing - I couldn't really test out the spf properties. Even though I live in Florida, the sun isn't at full strength due to the time of year. Judging by the other products performance back in July, I would bet that this works very well for the sunlight you may encounter on a normal day.

I give this product 5 out of 5 stars! This went on really nicely and worked as a good moisturizer. It didn't make me feel greasy or breakout or anything that a sunscreen would normally do to my face. I really just forgot I had it on and that is perfect for me :) It only takes a small amount, so it would last a good long time which makes the $20 price tag very fair. You should never forget a good sunscreen with your daily routine and this one fits the bill.

Bloom Review: skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

On my day off this week, I decided to have a Bloom Ambassador box fueled home spa day :) I used as many of my products as I could from the box that I need to review, so most of my reviews will have pictures from the same time since I did them back to back :) I had a lot of fun. Isn't it nice to just have a little time to pamper yourself? I think it is :)
Anyway, this is one of the more intriguing product from my box this month" skyn Iceland's Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. The whole skyn Iceland line is designed for 'stressed skin' and these in particular are supposed to be ab instant pick me up for your under eyes. The package says to just put these on for 10 minutes and it will diminish the look of fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles caused by stress, lack of sleep, or just life in general :) I have to admit, I was excited to try these babies out. I mean, those are some big claims - and I'm always tired!
I started with a totally 'fresh from the shower' clean face. I wanted to use them before I put any makeup on, but i guess you could really use them anytime. So, here's me right out of the shower.
As you can see, I have a serious dark circle problem. My doctors have told me it's due to my allergies and other internal issues. All I know is I've tried many a product that promises to help with dark circles and I have never had luck with any of them. Mostly, I was wanting to see how this product helped with my latest hang up - I have under eye wrinkles! When did that happen? I noticed them only a week or so ago when I used an unfortunate eye shadow color that really made them stand out. I mean, I'm only 27! I should not have wrinkles! Anyway, deep breath Megan, it's ok. It's a part of life. Get over it. So, these firming gels really came at the perfect time for me as I really want to see those babies tighten up.
I felt pretty silly with these things on. First off, I think I technically placed them too high, but I really wanted them to attack those wrinkles. They are very comfortable (unless you putt hem ridiculously high up like I did - I couldn't look down while I had them on lol), and they feel really nice and cool. Even if they don't firm things up, it was nice to just lay there with the cooling effect - I can see how they help with stress. So, I laid down with my hair in my oh-so-fashionable towel and my eye gels on for 10 minutes.
And here's the after effect. They were just as easy to take off as they were to put on - they are actually a gel so they don't adhere to the skin so much that they pull - that would defeat the purpose. They just gently peel off. As you can see, my dark circles are still there (just as expected *sigh* maybe one day...) but I did notice an improvement on the wrinkles.
Here's a side by side comparison. The wrinkle in the bottom photos (this shot was taken from below to really show the texture) show a real improvement :) The crease made by the wrinkle is much less pronounced! It is definitely still there, but not as deep and therefor not as noticeable.

I give this product a 5 out of 5 stars! These really performed as they promised! The skin under my eyes was tightened up after just the 10 minutes. It didn't fix my dark circles, but it probably would on someone who didn't have all the bad internal stuff that causes them like I do. Plus these felt fantastic while they were on - really a nice little pampering :) And for only $30 for 8 pairs they are very affordable. I highly recommend them!
